Cooling is typically half of an Orlando household electricity bill and can push higher in July and August. Plenty of advice circulates about reducing it, some of it genuinely effective and some of it folklore. Here is our ranking, based on what we actually measure on service calls.
Tier 1 — do these first
Clean the condenser coil (free, up to 30%)
Nothing else on this list comes close for cost-to-benefit. A coil packed with Florida pollen and grass clippings forces the compressor to work far harder to reject the same heat. Rinse it from the inside out with a garden hose twice a year, power off first, never a pressure washer.
Change the filter on schedule (about $20/year)
Every 30 days for a 1" filter, monthly without exception with pets. A restricted filter starves airflow, drops efficiency, and eventually freezes the coil. This is the cheapest insurance in the entire house.
Set the fan to AUTO, not ON
Fan on ON runs the blower continuously, which re-evaporates condensate off the coil back into your house between cooling cycles. You pay for the blower and get higher humidity in return. Free to change, immediately noticeable.
Tier 2 — worth real money
Seal attic ductwork ($400–$1,500)
This is the big one specific to Florida construction. Typical duct systems leak 20–30% of conditioned air, and in a Central Florida attic hitting 130°F, every leak on the return side pulls superheated air into the system. Sealing is one of the few upgrades that reliably pays back within a few seasons here.
Raise the setpoint two degrees
Roughly 6–8% saving per degree. Going from 72°F to 74°F is a real reduction, and if you fix the humidity problem first, 76°F at 48% RH is genuinely more comfortable than 72°F at 62%.
Twice-yearly professional maintenance
A correctly charged, clean, properly-set system uses meaningfully less power than a neglected one — and the visit also catches the failures that would otherwise become emergency calls.
Tier 3 — real, but slow payback
- Attic insulation top-up to R-38 — genuinely effective, but a multi-year payback
- Radiant barrier — measurable in Florida attics, less dramatic than the marketing suggests
- Solar screens or film on west-facing glass — good if you have a lot of afternoon sun exposure
- High-efficiency replacement — worth doing when the system is due anyway, rarely worth doing early just for the savings
